Markup pricing is the simplest honest way to price: figure out what something costs you, add your margin for overhead and profit, and that is the price. This calculator runs the numbers both ways — the selling price a markup produces, and the profit left on each unit.
The formula, in plain English
Price = cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100). A $40 cost with a 50% markup gives $40 × 1.50 = $60, leaving $20 of profit per unit.
Worked example
You install a fixture that costs you $180 in parts and allocated labor. With a 65% markup: price = 180 × 1.65 = $297.00, profit = $117.00 per install. Quote it at $297 with a clean invoice and the math defends itself.
Tips
- Include every cost before marking up. Materials and labor are the start — add delivery, disposal, card fees, and a slice of overhead, or the markup protects a number that was too low.
- Remember markup is not margin. A 50% markup is a 33.3% margin. If you think in margins, use our profit margin calculator instead.
- Revisit markup when suppliers move. Material prices drift; a markup set last year quietly shrinks as costs rise. Recheck it quarterly.
