Sales tax is a percentage added to the selling price of most goods and some services. The rate depends on where the buyer is — in the US it can stack state, county, and city taxes; in Canada it varies by province. This calculator does the arithmetic: enter the pre-tax price and the rate, get the tax amount and the total.

The formula, in plain English

Multiply the price by the tax rate, then divide by 100 — that is the tax. Add it to the price for the total. A $100 item at 8.5% carries $8.50 of tax, for a $108.50 total.

Worked example

You are invoicing a $2,400 repair job and your local combined rate is 7.25%. Tax = 2,400 × 7.25 ÷ 100 = $174.00. Total = 2,400 + 174 = $2,574.00. Put the tax on its own invoice line — clients trust math they can see.

Tips

  • Use the buyer's rate, not yours. Sales tax is generally based on where the customer receives the goods or service, and rates change by jurisdiction.
  • Be consistent about tax-inclusive vs tax-exclusive quotes. Saying "$500 plus tax" and "$540 all-in" are both fine — mixing them across quotes is not.
  • Show tax separately on every invoice. It keeps your books clean and answers the client's first question before they ask it.

Frequently asked questions

Is sales tax the same everywhere?

No. In the US, rates vary by state and often by county and city on top of that. Canada sets GST/HST federally with provincial variations. Always confirm the rate for the buyer's location.

Should my invoices include sales tax?

If you are required to collect sales tax, yes — list it as a separate line with the rate shown. If you are not required to collect it, do not add it; check your local rules or an accountant if you are unsure.

What is the difference between sales tax and VAT?

Sales tax is charged once, at the final sale to the customer. VAT (used in the UK, EU, and 170+ countries) is collected in stages along the supply chain. The math looks similar; the paperwork does not.
