What is a cash payment?

A cash payment is physical currency changing hands — immediate, final, and fee-free. The catch: no paper trail unless you create one. Always issue a receipt for cash, keep a duplicate, and deposit it promptly; 'the client paid cash' without documentation is an audit nightmare.

In practice

A house cleaner collects $150 cash per visit and writes a duplicate receipt on the spot — one copy for the client, one for her records.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to report cash income?

Yes — all of it. Cash income is taxable exactly like any other income, and the IRS specifically looks for underreported cash.

Should I give a receipt for cash?

Always. It's your proof the money changed hands and the customer's proof they paid. No receipt, no trail.

Is there a limit on cash payments?

US businesses must report cash receipts over $10,000 (Form 8300). Below that, cash is legal tender — just document it.
