What is an invoice number?
An invoice number is the unique identifier on every invoice — INV-2026-0042, for example. Sequential, gap-free numbering lets both sides reference the exact bill, keeps your books auditable, and is legally required in many countries. Never reuse or skip numbers.
In practice
A plumber's March invoices run INV-2026-031 through INV-2026-047. When a client asks 'which invoice is this payment for?', the number answers instantly.
Numbering handled automatically
Billia numbers every invoice sequentially — no gaps, no duplicates, no spreadsheets.

What format should invoice numbers use?
Any consistent one: INV-2026-001 is the classic. Include the year so sequences can restart cleanly each January.
Can I restart numbering each year?
Yes — INV-2026-001, then INV-2027-001. The requirement is uniqueness and sequence within your system, not one eternal counter.
What if I accidentally skip a number?
Don't reuse it or renumber — just note the gap. Auditors care about unexplained gaps, and a documented skip is fine. Better: use a generator that numbers automatically.
